The Origins of Bribie SLSC

The stirrings of the Bribie Surf Life Saving Club were felt in 1923 when the first surf patrol was held. Two young brothers, Harold and Burt Blake were construction contractors on the Bongaree-Woorim toll road who also held Royal Lifesaving Certificates. At the request of the Brisbane Tug and Steamship company, the Blakes volunteered to patrol Ocean Beach (north of Woorim) and once a reel was swiftly delivered in time for the Christmas holidays, the first safe summer of swimming was assured.

With funds donated from passengers on boats travelling between Bribie and Brisbane, the first SLSC hut was built in 1927. It was a far cry from today's luxuries, having no toilets or running water and lit only with carbide or kerosene lamps. With a growing need to be more centrally located, it was 1933 that the Club found its home here at Woorim Beach.

In the years leading up to WW2 the Bribie SLSC grew to 22 members which was capped due to the number of bunk beds available for members in the club hut. A major expansion to the clubhouse occurred in 1955-56 which saw a new kitchen, dining room, wood fuelled stove, bigger bunkroom, town water and electricity being installed.
